DEHRADUN: At least three people were charred alive after a fire engulfed a tent house on Nawabi Road in Haldwaniin Nainital district on Diwali (Sunday) night around 11.30pm. Those killed in the incident were identified as Ravindra Kumar and Krishan Kumar of Ramnagar and Rohit Puri, a resident of Dhari. Goods worth several lakhs were burnt to ashes.
Seeing the flames, the neighbours informed the police, the tent house owner and the fire brigade.
Before any help could reach the spot, the blaze had engulfed the entire complex. It took two hours for five fire tenders to douse the inferno.
SP (city) Harbans Singh, along with city magistrate Richa Singh, circle officer Bhupendra Singh Dhoni and chief fire officer Gaurav rushed to the spot.
The SP said, “Prima facie, it seems that a rocket (firecracker) fell on the tent house and the plastic waste dumped there caught fire. The flames then spread and engulfed the entire complex. However, we are still investigating all angles.” City magistrate Richa Singh said, “After the fire was brought under control, three bodies were recovered. Investigation is underway to ascertain the reason behind the fire.” Police said one Girish Hediya runs Kumaon Tent House on Navabi Road and he has a warehouse adjacent to that. About 40 people work at his tent house.
