TN school children take pledge to protect wetlands | Chennai News

TRICHY: School students in Vadakkuserpatti Government High School near Manapparai in Trichy district on Friday observed World Wetlands Day — celebrated annually on February 2 — by taking a pledge to protect the wetlands ecosystem. Teachers took the school students for a field trip to a nearby agricultural field and sensitised them on not dumping plastic waste in public spaces and waterbodies.
“The objective of celebrating the World Wetlands Day is to protect the existing wetlands and increase the size of wetlands. We identified cultivation fields with standing crops near our school to make the students realise the importance of protecting the farmlands,” said headmaster S Sarkunan.
A pledge was administered to the students to protect wetlands and agriculture fields in their villages.
Teachers created awareness among the students by listing the potential threats of dumping plastic and other wastes in waterbodies and wetlands that would harm the wetland ecosystem.
“We encouraged the children to read more about wetlands and environmental conservations in newspapers and books. Students assured us that they would not throw plastic covers used for wrapping chocolates and biscuits in public places,” Sarkunan added.
