LUCKNOW: Lectures, quizzes, motivational talks and plantation drives marked the celebration of World Environment Day in the city on Monday.
NBRI, Lucknow and the International Society of Environmental Botanists (ISEB) jointly celebrated the day by organizing a special lecture by environment expert Prof Venkatesh Dutta, who highlighted the research work done by his team on the restoration of rivers in Ganga Basin.
Citing a Central Pollution Control Board report, he claimed that Ganga water in Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal is no more fit for human consumption.
State Mission for Clean Ganga, Uttar Pradesh and Axis Bank jointly organised a ‘cleanthon’ to make people aware about the significance of keeping the banks of Gomti clean.
Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University’s School of Earth and Environmental Sciences also enlightened the audience about the urgent need to reduce plastic usage in order to protect our environment.

Scientists told students that more than 400 million tons of plastic are produced each year, half of which is designed for single use only. Of these, less than 10% is recycled. An estimated 19 million ton to 23 million ton end up in lakes, rivers and seas. Scientists made an appeal to students to discourage plastic use and also spread awareness about it.
