Swachh Survekshan: Indore bags cleanest city tag for 7th time; Surat emerges joint winner for 1st time | Indore News

NEW DELHI: Indore bagged the cleanest city of India title for the 7th year in a row while Surat emerged joint winner for the top rank for the first time in the latest Swachh Suvekshan results.
The Diamond City has been securing the second cleanest city rank since 2020. Among the cities with more than one lakh population, Navi Mumbai is the third on the list.
As per the Swachh Suvekshan results for 2023 released by President Droupadi Murmu, Saswad in Maharashtra got the cleanest city award among all cities with less than one lakh population.Patan in Chhattisgarh and Lonavala in Maharashtra got the second and third rank in the category.

Among the cantonment boards, Mhow bagged the cleanest cantonment area award and Varanasi got the best award among the Ganga towns. Among states, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh emerged as the cleanest.
The results of the 8th edition of the urban cleanliness survey were released on Thursday. The government claims it to be the world’s largest urban cleanliness survey.
The survey, which began in 2016 initially covered only 73 major cities and in 2023, the number has gone up to 4,477. The latest ranking has prioritised addressing legacy dumpsites, managing plastic waste, implementing the principles of reduce, reuse, recycle, and ensuring the safety of SafaiMitras.
“The survey’s emphasis on citizen engagement and feedback has been instrumental in its success. Overall the survey covered a population of around 409 million. A staggering 12 crore citizen responses were received during the assessment this year, marking an unprecedented level of engagement through various channels,” the ministry said.
