BENGALURU: Highlighting the perils of global warming, chief minister Siddaramaiah cautioned people on Monday.
“Humans are an integral part of nature. Destruction of nature is nothing but our own destruction and one day, we will face the consequences. All of us must grow and live with nature,” Siddaramaiah said at the World Environment Day celebrations organised by the department of environment, ecology and forest and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board.
Recalling his previous decision to ban the usage of single-use plastic in 2016 much before the Centre’s ban, Siddaramaiah said, “Nature has given us everything. We should also give something back. The interest with which we axe trees is not seen when it comes to planting them. It’s not just the duty of the forest department to plant trees.”
Forest minister Eshwar Khandre said, “The government has planned to make five prominent cities of Karnataka plastic-free in a few years. Besides, we have also taken a pledge to plant five crore trees this year by involving citizens and students.”
Officials from the department adopted five goals to ensure a plastic-free Karnataka. They are – a complete ban on manufacturing and usage of single-use plastics, commitment to segregation and recycling of plastics into usable materials, encouragement of startups involved in research and development of innovative technologies to beat plastic pollution, creation of green fund to support all these initiatives in collaboration with private sector CSR funds and respecting the UN’s #beat plastic pollution initiative.
