‘People leave beaches dirty and there’s so much plastic underwater’
“It is very important for our environment to have a healthy ocean because if there’s no blue, there’s no green! Our underwater plants and corals are getting bleached out because of the adverse effects of global heating. People leave beaches dirty and there’s so much plastic underwater. It is very important that you pick up the garbage and keep the beach clean. Single use plastic should definitely be banned and there should be a lot more awareness about it.”

‘We need to seriously take more effort to save our oceans’
‘Thankfully we have started beach clean-up drives in the city now, which makes the beaches more accessible. When we see clean and clear beaches abroad, it just tells us how we need to seriously take more effort to save our oceans. The sun and sand destinations that we travel abroad to, have strict rules and regulations. They really take care of their oceans and that’s something we should learn from them. Whenever I am underwater and I see plastic, I pick it up, hook it onto my (scuba diving) suit and trash it once I am on land. Whenever I am jet skiing and I see a bottle floating in the water, I stop to pick it up and then discard it at the right place’.

‘At night, you can experience a very different side of the ocean’
“Being underwater drains out all the noise and transports me to a completely different world. I find a lot of peace underwater. It is a very beautiful and a calming experience. What you see in the day is very different from what you see in the night. I was stunned when I did night snorkelling. I saw the eels coming out of their caves. They looked pretty, yet scary, but they didn’t come close to you. At night, you can experience a very different side of the ocean. It’s vast and dark down there. I haven’t tried scuba diving at night. You need courage as they just have one torch on their head and you can only see through that one beam of light and everything else is all black, like walking in outer space. During the day, I swam with turtles, I saw different sharks, crabs, starfishes and crustaceans. It’s a beautiful world out there.”
