DEHRADUN: During a conference organised by the Uttarakhand Council for Science and Technology in collaboration with the Eco Group society on Wednesday, experts emphasised the need to address the lack of source segregation system and enforce the ban on single-use plastic in order to improve the city’s ranking in Swachh Survekshan 2024. Dehradun had secured the 68th rank in 2023, up from 69th position in 2022.
Experts also highlighted the need for more collection centres and safe incineration units to manage plastic waste, e-waste and medical waste. They called for extensive public awareness campaigns and a more proactive approach from the state govt regarding penalising contractors and violators.
Naveen Kumar Sadana, associate director of Waste Warriors, an environmental NGO working in Uttarakhand, said, “Analysis of Swachh Survekshan rankings shows that source segregation is lacking in the city and implementation has failed at the govt level. The unprecedented amount of construction waste poses a significant challenge and there are no effective mechanisms in place to address it.”
Pramukh secretary Paramjit Singh Kakkar said, “We need better green management which begins with effective segregation. We have seen a significant reduction in waste generation by converting wet waste into organic fertilisers, a practice that can be adopted by people at home.”
While representatives of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation (DMC) were not present during the event, officials of Dehradun Smart City said that responsible waste management is a priority for the govt.
Shefali Juyal, environment and social nodal officer of Dehradun Smart City, said, “We are collaborating with the DMC to address legacy waste at Sheeshambara and implementing reforms at the city’s two waste transfer stations.”
