City beaches to be developed for Rs 100 crore | Chennai News

CHENNAI: Beaches in Besant Nagar, Ennore and Kovalam will get better facilities at an estimated 100 crore, while the famous sands at the Marina in Chennai and Marakkanam beach in Villupuram district will be enhanced to get Blue Flag certification which will mean more facilities for visitors.
Finance minister Thangam Thennarasu during his Budget speech on Monday said govt is taking significant steps to develop beaches in Tamil Nadu to international standards.”In the first phase, Blue Flag certification has been obtained for Kovalam in Chengalpet district. Following this, major beaches across the state including Marina in Chennai, Ariyaman in Ramanathapuram, Kayalpattinam in Tuticorin, Kodavilai in Tirunelveli, Kameswaram in Nagapattinam, Kattumavadi in Pudukkottai, Silver beach in Cuddalore and Marakkanam in Villupuram will be developed at an estimated cost of ₹250 crore to obtain blue flag certification,” he said.
Blue flag beaches are recognised for their water quality, environmental management, safety standards and practice of sustainable tourism. The minister also said that govt shall take proactive measures to control plastic pollution by involving youth from coastal communities in plastic waste management. “This will include disposal of abandoned and discarded fishing gear and implementing circular economy solutions in plastic waste hotspots,” he said.
