COIMBATORE: Heavy rain lashed Coimbatore district on Thursday night, throwing life out of gear. As showers intensified, the river Noyyal overflowed at several places, inundating agricultural fields.
With the northeast monsoon intensifying in the district, collector Kranthi Kumar Pati has advised the residents living in houses with mud walls, dilapidated houses and low-lying areas to move to safer places.He also warned the public against going near water bodies to take selfies or bath.
According to an official source, Mettupalayam, Periyanaickenpalayam and the foothills of Siruvani received heavy showers, even as the district recorded 113cm rainfall for the 24 hours that ended at 8am on Thursday.
Noyyal river was flooded following the incessant rain and hundreds of people thronged Chitharichavadi anaicut as it started overflowing to take photos and videos. However, revenue department officials advised them not to go to the anaicut area.

Noyyal water entered an agricultural field near Boluvampatti, where rain lasted till Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, flash flood left behind logs and plastic waste under a bridge across the Noyyal at Thennamanallur, forcing revenue officials to deploy earthmovers to clear them.
The district collector declared a holiday for 193 schools in Karamadai union in view of the incessant rainfall.
