Dabal farmers’ clean-up exercise shows results, waste in river reduces | Goa News

Margao: Concerned about the large amount of plastic waste in River Hood, farmers of Dabal in Dharbandora have taken it upon themselves to clean the waters of the bandhara built on the river.
For the past three years, members of the Dabal Farmers Self-Help Group have been cleaning the waters. The group retrieved nearly 11 bags of non-biodegradable waste when it initiated the exercise three years ago, the mentor of the group, Sachin Tendulkar, an agro-entrepreneur, told TOI.The quantity was reduced to around seven bags last year.
The group is buoyant over the success of their efforts. “As a result of the exercise, we had very little non-biodegradable waste this year. The waste collected hardly filled four bags,” Tendulkar said. Eleven farmers who participated in the exercise used a kayak to retrieve the plastic that was entangled alongside the river bank.
To deter miscreants from littering the place that consequently pollutes the waters of the river, South Goa ZP chairperson Suvarna Tendulkar took the initiative of installing a CCTV camera on the Dabal side of the Hood near the Dabal-Nirankal bridge, while the Nirankal panchayat has installed another on the Nirankal side.
